Murungai Poo Kootu/Drumstick Blossom Kootu/Moringa Flower Dal

By Priya Srinivasan - I Camp in My Kitchen - Monday, January 06, 2014

In chennai, atleast once in a month, we used to have drumstick leavs subzi/sambhar. But after coming to dubai, it is very hard for me to find these nutritious greens. Whenever we go to the vegetable market, we used to find few packets and they cost a lot for a handful of leaves, that too all wilted. Though i see 4 drumstick trees right opposite to my flat, in the compound of a banking institute, but i never dared to go and pluck some fresh leaves. First of all, i feel so shy to go and secondly what if they look strange at me like who is this mad woman grazing a tree??? so, every time i pass that building i give a big sigh!!!!
Then yesterday all of a sudden, my help got me a big bag of blossoms. I was completely bonkers seeing those fresh blossoms smiling at me. Today morning i made a delicious kootu and have saved some to try some stir-fry,later this week.

3 cups of Drumstick blossom
3/4 cup chana dal/gram dal
1 medium onion
1 medium tomato
2 tbsp freshly grated coconut/desiccated coconut
Salt to taste
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp hing
1/4 tsp turmeric
6-7 nos green chilies
a sprig of curry leaf

  • Clean and wash drumstick blossom, there is a chance of little bugs, so clean thoroughly I normally spread it on flat plate, look for any spoilt blossoms/leaves, remove it and then wash them in batches in water.
  • Pressure cook chana dal/gram dal for 4-5 whistles or until soft. I soak the chana dal overnight so it is easy for me to cook in the morning.
  • Heat a kadai, heat oil for tempering, splutter mustard seeds, add hing and curry leaves. Add green chilies and saute for a minute.
  • Next add onions and saute until translucent. Add tomatoes and cook until soft and oil separates. Now add washed drumstick blossoms and saute well. Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes, until the blossoms are cooked.
  • Next add cooked chana dal, coconut and salt and 1 cup of water to this.Mix well. Let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and serve with Rice.  I packed this for my hubby's lunch along with roti's and bhindi paneer subzi.
