Sweet puffs, puff pastry filled with sweet filling of coconut and mixed fruit. A south-indian style popular bakery snack.

Bakery style Dil Pasand puffs

Dil pasand or Dil khush are sweet coconut buns that we get in bakeries across India. These soft and fluffy buns are stuffed with sweet coconut and tutti frutti.

The Iyengar bakery style dil pasands are flaky puff pastries. They are filled with sweet coconut fillings. Their amazing aroma pulls you like a jerry mouse to Mozzarella.

Some Easy Desserts For your Next Party

I love puff pastry bakes, they are quick, easy and have lot of variety. You have a lot of options when you have a pack of puff pastry squares in your freezer.

My personal favorite is this Puff pastry Baklava. It has a delicious walnut filling stuffed between puff pastry sheets and baked to perfection. It is served with a generous drizzle of sweet saffron syrup.

If you love apples, then you will definitely like this French apple tart. It has delicious thin-cut apple slices beautifully baked on a puff pastry sheet. You will also like these baked apple roses.

All these desserts make a wonderful centerpiece on your party table. If you are looking for a fruit based dessert, try this chocolate & strawberry cream mini puff.

We love this Strawberry cream pie, a fun bake with corn flakes and fresh strawberries. You must try Apple pie rollups or Cream cheese floats for a crunchy layer and fresh fruits topped.

Ingredients for Dil Khush Puffs

  • Puff pastry, I have used store bought readymade puff pastry squares.
  • Coconut, I have used desiccated coconut for the Dil pasand puffs, you can also use shredded and frozen coconut.
  • Mixed fruits & nuts, I have used tutti frutti and sliced almonds in the sweet puff recipe along with milk to bind the stuffing better.
  • Flavorings, I have used cardamom with a pinch of saffron for the coconut puffs recipe.

How to Make Dil Pasand Puffs

Please check recipe card below for exact measurements of each ingredient used and also for the detailed instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180C. Line a baking tray with parchment.
  • I have used store bought puff pastry squares. We get a mini square and a medium square. I have used both the mini squares as such and the medium squares cut vertically into half.
  • Take the frozen pastry squares and line them on the baking tray. Let it sit on the tray and come to room temperature.
  • In my experience if i allow the pastry squares to thaw in the refrigerator, they kind of clump together, this way works well for me.
  • While the puff pastry is thawing, let us make the stuffing.
  • In a wide bowl, add desiccated coconut, sugar, tutti frutti, raisins, almond slices and cardamom powder. Mix them well together.
Hpw to make sweet coconut puffs
  • To this mix, now add 1-2 tablespoon of milk and combine. It should resemble a wet mix, holding the coconut and the mixed fruits and nuts well.
  • Once the sheets thaw, place 1-2 teaspoon of filling in each sheet. Close it with another puff pastry sheet. Seal the edges with water. I used a fork and crimped the edges.
  • Brush the top of the pastry with milk, sprinkle little sugar on top. Bake them in the preheated oven for 18 minutes or until the pastries puff up beautifully and brown nicely on top.
  • Once done, remove the baked pastries from the oven, let it cool on a wire rack well. Enjoy these nostalgic sweet puffs or coconut puffs warm with your evening cup of chai.

Ingredients

  • 40 nos Puff Pastry Sheets I have used mini ones.
  • cup Desiccated coconut
  • cup sugar
  • ¼ cup tutti frutti
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds
  • 2 tablespoon each golden and black raisins
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 4 nos cardamom, skin removed, seeds alone powdered
  • a pinch of saffron optional

  • Preheat the Oven to 180C. Line a baking tray with parchment.
  • I have used frozen mini puff pastry squares for the coconut puffs.
  • Remove the frozen puff pastry sheets and line it on the parchment paper and let them come to room temperature.
  • I have tried thawing the puff pastry sheets in the refrigerator, but they sort of stick together and becomes messy. Arranging them while they are still frozen works well for me.

Let us prepare the stuffing

  • While the puff pastries are thawing, let us make the stuffing. In a wide bowl, take together coconut, tutti frutti, raisins, almonds, cardamom powder and saffron.
  • Add milk to this and mix well. The final mix should be wet and holding the mixed fruits and nuts well with coconut.

Let us make Sweet Puffs

  • By this time, the puff pastry must have thawed well. Place 1 - 2 teaspoon of stuffing in each sheet.
  • Close the pastry with another pastry square, seal the edges with water. I have used fork and crimped the edges. This way you will get 20 coconut puffs.
  • Brush the tops of the pastry with milk. Make small slits on top for air vent. Sprinkle some sugar on top for a caramelization
  • Bake the pastries in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until they rise beautifully and the tops brown well. Mine were done by 18 minutes. I turned on the top rod for last 3 minutes for the sugar to caramelize.
  • Oven baking time and temperature varies with models. So bake accordingly. Keep an eye on the coconut puffs after 15 minutes.
  • Once done, remove the puff pastry from the oven. Remove them on to a wire rack. Let them cool completely.
  • They keep well on the counter for a day. Since it is made of coconut and milk, i prefer refrigerating them in an air-tight container.
  • If serving puffs from the refrigerator, reheat them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and serve warm.
  • Enjoy these delicious coconut buns warm with your evening cup.

🥟 Why Puff Pastry ?

Why not? First of all, it is easily available here, i know it is tough to source in some places. Secondly it is easy to shape them, as i type this recipe, i m getting, another 4 recipe ideas using them.

When i shared the strawberry braids made using puff pastry in FB, people thought it is rocket science. No, not at all, if i can do it, so do you.

Seriously, i suck pretty bad, making something beautiful. My friend calls me 'Thatakai', a demon from Indian Mythology. I cannot handle anything delicate, cannot do dainty cut veggies or beautiful looking shapes while cooking.😈

French apple tart

One of the most tedious task for me is to cut veggies thin, it was so frustrating while i was trying to make apple roses, i made 3-4 attempts, just because i couldn't cut apples thin! 😰

So, people if you want a quick dessert, that looks pretty and tastes a billion bucks then this Apple tart is for you.

📋 The Ingredients for the Apple Tart

  • Puff pastry, every grocery stores have it here, i always have a pack in my freezer. We need one 6x6 pastry sheet.
  • Apples, i have used Royal gala, we get a variety of apples here, recently i tried them with the soft Iranian apples too.
  • Spices, i have used cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg powder along with vanilla for the tart. All these spices give a warm feeling as the tart bakes.
  • Butter, better not to miss it. I have not tried a vegan replacement in this recipe.

Another puff pastry recipe. This is my third attempt in making these roses. I m yet to master the art of making these delicate beauties. I will definitely try one more time before this marathon and take a decent shot of these roses. If you get the apples thin, then this is a breezy recipe.
Excuse me for the bad pictures, i clicked around 4-5 recipes the same day, i ran out of ideas and became totally dry.  I m making them again and will definitely update the pictures. For now, enjoy the recipe!

Ingredients
2 sheet of puff pastry
1 apple, cut into thin slices
3 tablespoon melted powder or 3 tablespoon any fruit jam
1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder (optional)
2 tablespoon sugar
Method
  • If the puff pastry is frozen, thaw it in the refrigerator for an hour or two. Remove it 30 minutes before making the roses and let it rest on the kitchen counter.
  • Wash the apple and cut it into thin slices an keep it immersed in lemon juice infused water for 5 minutes. Drain the water and arrange the apple slices on a ceramic plate or a microwave safe plate and Microwave them at high for 45 seconds for them to soften. This will prevent them from breaking while rolling them into roses. Trust me, they break like crazy, this step will ensure they become pilable, rollable with the pastry sheet. So, dont miss this step!!!!

  • Generously flour your work surface, roll the pastry and cut it into 8X2 inches strips. i made 6 strips, since i made 6 roses.
  • Lay one strip, either brush it with butter or apply jam on the strip, i tried both, and recommend butter. Arrange the apple slices, overlapping each other, around 8-10 slices on a pastry sheet. It should arranged in such way, part of the apple is on the pastry sheet and other half outside the pastry sheet. Sprinkle cinnamon powder and sugar. Close the other half of the past sheet over the apples.
  • Now start rolling it into a rose. Once rolled, press the loose end well to seal. Place the rolled pastry in a well greased muffin pan. Repeat the same with the rest of the sheets.
  • Preheat the oven to 200C and bake the roses for 30-40 minutes or until the pastry turns golden brown and the apples shrivel well on top.
  • Remove the muffin tin from the oven, let it rest for 5 minutes on the wire rack. Then slowly remove the apple roses from the tin. Serve it warm, dusted with some castor sugar

A simple and easy bake with puff pastry sheets. I always stock puff pastry and spring roll sheets in my freezer. Never know when you feel like having a quick pie or a savory puff. With 3 packs of strawberries, i immediately thought of making these cream puffs with strawberries. Just before braiding the puffs i got the thought of adding chocolates. Aren't chocolate & strawberries match made in heaven ??? oh yes, they are, along with cream cheese it takes up a notch up.

Ingredients
6 puff pastry squares or 3nos  long puff pastry sheets
6 plump strawberries
¼ cup cream cheese
2 tablespoon castor sugar
9 Hershey kisses or any other milk chocolate
2 tablespoon granulated sugar for garnish

Method

  • I used puff pastry squares, so joined 2 squares to form one sheet that is 7 inch long.Dust your work surface with flour, lay the squares interlacing in the ends and roll them  with a rolling pin to form one sheet.
  • Mix cream cheese and sugar and chop the each strawberry into 3-4 slices.  Lay the puff pastry sheet and spread a tablespoon of cream cheese in the middle of the sheet. Place 6-8 chopped slices of strawberries and top it with 3 Hershey kisses chocolate.
  • Cut 4-5 plaits for the braid on each side of the pastry sheet. Close the top inside and start braiding the strips together. While nearing  the end of the braid, first close the bottom flap inside and close the last braid.
  • Brush the tops of the braids with with milk and garnish the top with granulated sugar. Bake the braids in a preheated oven at 220C for about 25-28 minutes or until the tops are crispy and golden brown.

  • Remove them from the oven let it cool completely. Serve them dusted sugar.

I restrict myself from buying Nutella. yes, you heard it right. While shopping, i never go near the aisle where these bottles of addiction are stacked. Its been almost a year, since we tasted them. I got a small bottle during holidays, as both the kiddos were at home, thinking it might help me in a quick snack to satiate any sudden hunger pangs. To my surprise, it was not opened at all.
Now this little bottle of temptation was sitting in my pantry, waiting for someone to open and make its life fruitful. Finally, last weekend i made some puffs for our evening snack. The chocolaty inside with a crispy puff on the outer, was loved by kids. To give it a rich look, i drizzled some dark chocolate sauce on top. I loved the way it looked, rich and classy.  Nothing goes wrong with Nutella right? The puffs vanished as they came out of the oven. Any leftover can be cling-wrapped and refrigerated. Warm them in a microwave for 20 seconds, before serving.

Ingredients
4 nos puff pastry sheets (approximately 4 inch squares)
½ cup Nutella
2 tablespoon butter to brush the pastries
100 grams dark chocolate for drizzling the puffs

Method

  • Remove the puff pastry sheets from the freezer  and thaw 30 minutes prior to baking them. I  divided each square it into two for the ease of eating it, call it portion control :).
  • Line a baking tray with alu-oil or parchment paper, place 8 divided squares on the tray. Place a tablespoon of nutella in the center of each sheet. Close with another sheet of pastry. Press the sides together to seal well. Brush the tops with butter or water.
  • Preheat the oven to 200C. Bake the puffs for 35-40 minutes or until the puffs brown  well.  Remove the puffs from the oven. let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • While it is cooling, take the chocolate in a microwave safe mug. Microwave high for a minute for the chocolate to melt. Whisk well to a smooth sauce.

  • Using a fork or spoon, drizzle the sauce on the puffs. Serve warm dusted with little caster sugar and watch them vanish.

Puff pastry baklava

Why Puff Pastry Baklava?

Puff pastry desserts are simple and quick. I always keep a pack of puff pastry sheets in my freezer for sudden dessert cravings. You can almost stuff anything sweet/savory into them and bake. Like this simple Nutella star bread or the apple tart

Puff pastry baklava is a simple bread, with puff pastry sheets. I saw a video on FB, i dont remember the page, it is of a brand, promoting their pastry sheets. Loved the simple idea, so i made it immediately for the hungry mouths at home.

Puff pastry bread

Thank god, i made 2 breads. One as a star and other a vaguely shaped like Fougasse. I served them the Fougasse, they licked the plate clean! The pastry is sweetened with orange juice infused sugar syrup, which heightens the taste even more.

This can be baked a day or two ahead, and can be warmed before serving, add the sugar syrup just before serving. A simple and pretty bake for parties and get-togethers.

Step by Step pictures for Puff Pastry Baklava

Please check recipe card below for exact measurements of each ingredient used and also for the detailed instructions

  • To make this puff pastry baklava, you will need 2 roll of puff pastry sheets. It is not the short squares, but the ones that are of the size of an A3 Sheets.
puff pastry bake
  • I have used a mix of nuts as stuffing. Roll the sheets out, use a round plate (8 inches diameter) as shape guide and cutout the rolled sheets. Lay down one sheet, brush with butter generously, sprinkle the nuts mixture, cover it with the othe sheet.
puff pastry shaping
  • Place a small dessert bowl(roughly 1.5 inches in diameter), in the center and cut the sheet into quarters from the bowl. Now cut each quarter into 3 parts.
star bread
  • Starting from any point, twist two strings in the opposite direction to form a ripple and press the edges together to seal like a petal. Bake the bread in a preheated oven @ 200C until done. While the puff pastry baklava is baking, make the sugar syrup.
  • Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven, let it sit for 10 minutes, pour the warm sugar syrup on top and serve.

  • 3 pods cardamom seeds alone, crushed
  • 2 tablespoon milk to brush on top

Sugar Syrup

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 4-5 nos cardamon pods crushed
  • 2 nos cloves crushed
  • juice of ½ an orange

Instructions

  • Take all the nuts, along with cardamom and cloves in a mixer and pulse it to get a coarse powder.Remove the puff pastry sheets, and let it thaw for  30 minutes on the kitchen counter.
  • Dust your work surface well with flour. Roll puff pastry sheets a bit, and use a plate (8 inches diameter) to cut out 2 round shapes.
  • Place one round-cut  pastry sheet on a well greased baking pan, brush the sheet with butter and  spread nuts powder generously on it. Now place the other sheet on top of the nuts and close.
  • Now comes the fun part of cut and braid. Place a small dessert bowl(roughly 1.5 inches in diameter), in the center and cut thesheet into quarters from the bowl. Now cut each quarter into 3 parts
  • Starting from any point, twist two strings in the opposite direction to form a ripple and press the edges together to seal like a petal.
  • Preheat the oven to 220C. Brush the top of the bread with some milk and sprinkle some nuts powder on top. Bake it for about 20-22 minutes until the top turns golden brown.
  • While the bread is baking , make the sugar syrup. Take everything, except orange juice, in a sauce pan, let it boil until sugar dissolves completely, Take it off the stove. Add orange juice and let it cool.
  • Remove the star. Let it cool for 10-15 minutes. Pour the sugar syrup on top and serve it warm. Just see them dissappear, my people even drank the sugar syrup, like coffee!!!

This beautiful puff pastry baklava makes a great party center piece and a delicious dessert to celebrate any occasion.

After a long hiatus, i started baking at home. What so special you might ask, for a person who bakes almost every second day, this 2 months of no-bake is like suddenly being a Atheist from Theist. My inner-self would love to bake a delicious cake or stunning bread, but then my energy levels were so bad, i will open my freezer, bite a block of dark chocolate and return back to regular work.
Thanks to this Bake-a-thon, i m trying to shun that laziness and trying to be friendly with my Oven.  All this December i will be blogging about some delicious bakes every other day. Unlike previous year, i don't have any theme this year. So,it is just a random bake, some breads, some easy to bake snacks.
For the first day, it is guava and almond turnovers. I had some neglected guava's in the fridge, put them to good use in this pastry. None, could find out it has guava and my elder one enjoyed it so much.
Sorry for the terrible pictures, i m lost somewhere, reading again to take some decent pics, hope i will be back to my own self by the end of this bake-a-thon.

Ingredients
10 nos puff pastry squares
4 no ripened guava
¼ cup chopped almonds
2-3 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon oil for brushing on top

Method

  • Lay the pastry squares on a baking pan. I used a rectangle baking tray lined with aluminium foil. Which can hold 12 pastries. since i used frozen, i just rested it for 10 minutes on the tray for it to thaw and become usable.
  • Wash the guavas well. In a deep-bowl, grate the guava's and add 2 teaspoon of sugar and mix well. If you feel, you can peel the skin of the guava first and then grate it. Do not grate the seeds, since the seeds are in the center just grate the sides of the fruit.
  • Once the sheets are soft, add a tablespoon of fruit pulp and top with few chopped almonds. Close the other side and press to seal. sprinkle little sugar on top.
  • Slit the top of the squares for steam escape while baking. Preheat the oven to 200 C. Bake the square for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.. Take it out of the oven, let it cool for a minute or two on a wire rack.
  • Serve warm, sprinkled with sugar or as such along with Evening Tea/coffee.
