Murungai poo Kootu/Drumstick flower Dal

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Drumstick flowers/Murungai poo/Moringa blossoms
  • ¾ cup Chana dal/Kadalai paruppu/Gram dal
  • 1 medium tomato finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh coconut frozen coconut can also be used
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste

Tempering

  • 2 teaspoon oil any vegetable oil or coconut oil
  • 6-7 green chilies split lengthwise
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp hing/asafoetida
  • a sprig of curry leaf

Instructions

  • Clean and wash drumstick blossom, there is a chance of little bugs, so clean thoroughly I normally spread it on flat plate,look for any spoilt blossoms/leaves, remove it and then wash them in batches in water.
  • Soak the chana dal atleat an hour before cooking. Pressure cook chana dal/gram dal for 4-5 whistles or until soft.
  • Heat a kadai, heat oil for tempering, splutter mustard seeds, add hing and curry leaves. Add green chilies and saute for a minute. 
  • Add tomatoes and cook until soft and oil separates. Now add washed drumstick blossoms and saute well. Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes, until the blossoms are cooked.
  • Next add cooked chana dal, coconut and salt and 1 cup of water to this.Mix well.
  • Let it simmer for another 10 minutes. Remove from heat and serve with Rice.
  • I packed this for my hubby's lunch along with roti's and bhindi paneer
