Easy Sweet Aval Recipe

Sweet Poha | Aval, a quick and easy vegan recipe. An easy to make after school snack or a quick neivedhiyam for your Friday poojas.

Why you should try this Sweet Poha?

This recipe of inipu aval aka sweet aval is my mother's. This was her snack when she is fasting the whole day. She will come home from work, quickly mix everything up, offer it to God and eat.

A simple to make recipe. She never used milk in her sweet aval. I m using very little quantity to wet and make the rice flakes soft.

Coconut milk and fresh coconut makes the recipe delicious and sweetly aromatic. Not to forget it is Gluten-free and Vegan too.

Check this Poha with fruits for another delicious, hearty and filling poha recipe. Do you know this Dahi churra , poha mixed with fruits and curd, is a festival offering for Sankranti in Bihar?

If you are a savory person, then you a have whole variety of poha you can make. Pepper Poha, rice flakes flavored with black pepper powder is my all time favorite and a quick one too. If you love tangy, zingy flavors, then check this Lemon Poha. Coconut poha is another Vegan recipe, mildly sweet and spicy with flavors of coconut and chilies.

The Ingredients

  • Poha | Rice flakes, I have used thin variety of rice flakes. They get soft easily, thick variety can also be used, but needs bit of soaking to get it soft.
  • coconut milk , a minimal quantity is used to make the rice flakes/aval soft. If you are not particularly vegan, you can also use normal milk.
  • Freshly grated coconut , adds volume and great texture to this simple dish.
  • Sugar, I have used sugar as the sweetener, you can also use powdered jaggery or fine brown sugar.
  • Spices, i have added cardamom, clove and dry ginger powder to flavor the sweet poha.
  • Garnish, handful of almonds are used in the recipe, you can also use mixed nuts or cashewnuts.

This no cook sweet poha for fasting days looks so light and flavorful. I had this at my friend's place. It was so delicious, yet due to politeness, I refrained from asking her for the recipe. Now, I can attempt to make it myself and enjoy this sweet poha.

Priya, your recipe of sweet poha brings back memories to the time when my aunt would hold a satsang after Janmashtami and we would get sweet poha as prasadam. I actually forgot about this easy dish to prepare for Janmashtami till I came across your post. Bookmarked it to prepare it this year. Interesting how you've also added ginger powder.
