Smoothies : My Go-to Breakfast

I m not a big breakfast person. Even though my mornings starts early at 5 am, I cannot eat anything until it is 10:30 am. I prefer to start my day with handful of nuts and a hearty smoothie

Smoothies are my go to breakfast. Handful of frozen fruits, blended with milk/yogurt with dash of oats, nuts and seeds, makes a nutrition dense breakfast and keeps me satiated for longer hours.

Banana : Mood Booster

Do you know it has a component called serotonin? that enhances your mood. Next time, if you feel low, try a banana, might bring a smile on your face.  I always keep a banana or two at home, during my period days, it definitely makes you feel better.

Apart from being a mood booster, bananas add good volume to smoothies and also acts as a natural sweetener. This smoothie today with banana and fresh figs, is naturally sweetened, no sugar/honey/syrup added.

Figs are well known for their health benefits. They are good in dietary fiber, potassium and good gut bacteria. My sister in Mumbai, has a huge fig tree in her apartment compound and families there enjoy fresh figs, whenever they want. To pluck a fruit straight from the tree and munching it, the freshness and to enjoy a fruit grown organic with no nonsense pesticide, is incomparable.

How to Pick Fresh Figs?

Do you know, fig is one of the first few plants, cultivated by humans? The plant tolerates seasonal drought, and the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean climates are especially suitable to it.

I didn't know how to pick figs, until recently . Fresh figs are very delicate and they don't stay good for long, their life-time is only 2 or 3 days, so if buying fresh figs look for that deep color and tender skin. If buying un-ripened ones, let them stay on the counter till they ripe, then store in the fridge and consume it within 2 or 3 days. Dried figs are available all year around, and are very easy to store.

Some Delish Smoothie from my Kitchen

You will always find a pouch of frozen berries in my freezer, they come pretty handy for those sudden hunger pangs. This colorful Strawberry grape smoothie and Strawberry chocolate smoothie are my little ones favorite.

When in season i love this persimmon smoothie with date syrup . If you are like me, you will definitely love this luscious papaya dry fruit smoothie. Both these milk smoothies have a gorgeous golden color.

Living in UAE, we have summer for most part of the year. During those scorching summer days, yogurt smoothies are life savers. Beets lassi, Amla lassi, Carrot & ginger lassi  are my personal favorites. They quickly refresh you, hydrate instantly and give you much needed energy boost .

Recently i have started using oat milk and absolutely love it, makes no difference in taste, so if you are lactose intolerant or in a vegan lifestyle, oat milk is your best buddy.

Ingredients List for Fresh Fruit Smoothie

  • Fruits : I have used fresh bananas and fresh fig to make this creamy smoothie.
  • Liquid : I have used milk as the liquid in this smoothie. This adds volume to the smoothie. If vegan use any plant based milk you are comfortable with. My personal choice would be oat milk.
  • Sweetener : No sweetener is used in this smoothie. Banana and figs are naturally sweet and that is enough to make this smoothie delish.
  • Garnish : I have used a sprinkle of chia seeds, you can go ahead and use any seeds or nuts of your choice. I would prefer some pumpkin or sunflower seeds.

Notes

I have mentioned the serving size for the above recipe as 1.
  • Some find banana smoothies too thick and filling, if you are that someone than you can divide the servings into 2.
  • While some find 1 serving of this delish banana fig smoothie,  a filling meal and enjoy it full. So divide accordingly. (I belong to this category)

We don't get fresh figs here, and even if we get, the price is too high. Your smoothie has turned out very nice. I can imagine how delicious it might be..

Lovely smoothie. My uncle had a huge tree called atti haanu, they are like figs but smaller I loved going to his place as my breakfast and lunch and dinner( if allowed) was these fruits. Now I know what I need to pick up for my breakfast but then that is when I next visit the market.
